CELL COVERAGE IN SWAIN UNDER WAY

Swain, N.Y. Grove town Supervisor Mike Johnsen stated that Verizon began construction on a 250-foot permanent cell phone tower off Swain Hill Road Tuesday, ending around seven years of negotiations and petitioning for cell coverage.

If you look at Verizon's coverage map there is a big hole between Dalton and Canaseraga and this tower will allow Verizon to fill that gap, said Johnsen. Of course we'd like to think the 100,000 skiers that visit (Swain Resort) helped sway them to finally get this done.

The alternative was a temporary cell site at the ski center parking lot, but we're glad this is a permanent tower, he said.

The Grove town planning and zoning boards approved the building permit and other requirements in late winter and now it's a matter of waiting for the tower to be constructed before it can be connected to the Verizon network.

An excavator has begun digging the foundation at the site and Verizon is in the process of seeking the Federal Aviation Administration's approval, according to the supervisor.

It will be 30 days for the concrete to cure before they begin erecting the tower, said Johnsen. We're told it will be operational in roughly three months from the time of start of the construction, and that includes the 30 days to connect the tower. Weare expecting coverage to start time between middle to end of September, but the key thing is we'll have it in time for the ski season to start and that's the big thing...This is big news for the ski center.
